Our teaching team has a strong understanding that all children, family/whanau have different cultural, learning and development needs.

It is this understanding that inspires them to work alongside each other, ensuring each child realises their uniqueness and value.

Each child is unique. We wish each individual to flourish. That’s why our aim is for each child to achieve the learning outcomes of taking an interest, getting involved, expressing points of view, persevering with tasks, and to take responsibility. We provide a warm, nurturing environment where children and their family/whanau can take part in responsive, reciprocal relationships.

Tonia Salt, Preschool Owner & Supervisor
“It just feels like a big extended family to me.”

Hi. I’ve been working in preschools for the past 23 years – 20 of those at The James Street Preschool. In 1995 I was appointed Supervisor, then in 2002 had the opportunity to take ownership. Still working in the supervisory role, I enjoy being accessible to both parents and staff on a daily basis. In 2002, I completed my Diploma of Teaching, receiving it with a high Merit. I’m also a very happy mum to four gorgeous children – Taygen, Kynan, Rheon, Aneira and a labradoodle called Lexi.

Murray Salt, Preschool Owner & Administrator
“Teaching is an enjoyable way of life for me.”

With over 18 years teaching Science and Electronics in the Secondary Education sector, I have been involved in many roles within the middle management during this time. With a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours, and a Diploma of Teaching under my belt, I decided to leave the Secondary sector and work alongside Tonia, focusing solely on the administration of The James Street Preschool. In my own time, I enjoy mountain and road cycling, time with my family, and reading.
